Subsurface Explorations

APEC provides geotechnical engineering consulting and designservices, subsurface drilling and sampling, and laboratory testing. As part of our geotechnical investigation, subsurface drilling and sampling with laboratory testing of the soil samples are completed to provide an evaluation of the subsurface for our client’s development projects. Our sampling procedures and testing are conducted in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO Standards. APEC’s staff has worked on projects ranging from commercial multi-story structure design, highway embankments and construction, tunnel construction, residential subdivision development, and bridge design.

Design of Foundation Systems, Retaining Walls, Pavements

APEC’s engineers have the experience to help with your foundation system, retaining walls, and pavement design due to changing soil conditions or improperly compressed soils. Significant structural damage can occur if a strong foundation is not designed properly.

Slope Stability Analysis

APEC’s engineers are experienced in slope stability analysis to determine the potential for naturally occurring or engineered soil or rock slopes. Stable slopes may become unstable, leading to mass movement and our design engineers can help with this. Our engineers can assist in your design by determining how to stabilize a slope or repair a failing slope by adding surface cover, excavating or regrading the slope, adding support structures to reinforce the slope, or using drainage methods to control the groundwater in slope material.

Forensic Investigations

When a structural failure occurs, the immediate action is to ensure the stability of the remaining structure and protect public safety. APEC’s engineers will conduct an investigation to evaluate the extent of the failure and determine the next steps to repair the structural failure. After the evaluation is complete and public safety is protected, our engineers will analyze the failure through site-specific investigations to determine the causes of the failure. Sometimes this leads to legal actions and we use our experienced engineers as an expert witness in these cases.

Karst Investigation

Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. The land above karst features can be very unstable and dangerous, and most people think of sinkholes or caves with karst, however, there are many other features associated with karst topography that need to be investigated. APEC’s team of professional geologists and geotechnical engineers have karst experience across the US to investigate and mitigate any karst terrain where your project may be located.
